Perry Bourgault

My photography journey started the summer before 6th grade when my dad and I took a trip to South Africa. On this trip I had the opportunity to document what I saw with my dads digital camera. The following summer I discovered the ability to edit photos on the photos app on my iphone and I really enjoyed that. I asked for a DSLR camera for Christmas that year and got one and I have never looked back. The first photos I took were not very good but through practice and a lot of experimentation I was able to figure out the settings on my camera to take photos that I was proud of.
Many of my early photo work centered around travel. I would often take the majority of my photos when I was away from home as I assumed that home was boring because I was so used to it. I still take a lot of photos when I travel but I have challenged myself to think more creatively about my everyday life. In high school I took several photography classes and these helped me branch out into new styles of photography and experiment with different methods and techniques. In my junior year of high school I was paid for my photography for the first time doing portrait photography for families and couples.
Another area of photography that I developed a love and passion for is wildlife. I enjoy using my camera and photography skills as a tool to display the other living beings that inhabit this planet. In this same frame of mind I really enjoy landscape photography and showcasing the beauty of nature and the environment. Photography has also led me to make lots of connections throughout my travels. I often find myself meeting other photographers and having long conversations with them. One of my favorite examples of this was a trip to Maine where my girlfriend and I laid out on a rock for several hours waiting for a moose and met several other photographers out there waiting as well. Photography has led me to make connections in the most unlikely of places. My portfolio serves as a visual history of my artistic expression through my camera. I am still evolving in my capabilities but I am proud of the work that I have done so far and the progress that I have made.
